What does Motor
Trade Insurance cover?
Most policies are split into two areas;
Road Risks and Internal Risks. Road Risks covers loss or damage to vehicles that are transported on public highways in connection to your business. Internal Risks cover your premises, vehicles on site, stock, machinery, equipment, tools as well as business interruption and liability.
With Motor Trade Combined Insurance, you can select the exact cover your business needs, including:
Road Risks Cover
The legal minimum insurance for motor traders, covering vehicles in connection with your business, such as customer vehicles for repairs or sale. You can choose third-party, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive cover, and even add demonstration cover for customer test drives.
Business Premises Cover
Protect the structure of your premises, whether owned or leased. In case of damage or destruction, this cover ensures you can continue trading.
Tools and Equipment
Covers essential diagnostics and repair tools, including ramps, lifting tables, paint spray booths, and portable hand tools.
Employers’ Liability Cover
A legal requirement for businesses with employees, offering protection against claims of injury or damage to employee property, including legal and settlement costs.
Public Liability Cover
Provides the same protection as employers’ liability, but for claims from members of the public. You can get cover up to £10m, or higher with some insurers.
Stock of Vehicles
Covers vehicles stored on your business premises overnight, up to an agreed limit.
Money Cover
Protects against theft of money handled on-site.
Service and Sales Indemnity
This provides:
- Protection for faulty or incorrect work
- Protection for repair to a vehicle if it develops a problem post sale
Covers claims for injuries or accidental damage following parts fitting or vehicle sales.
Business Interruption Cover
Protects you if your business is unable to operate due to fire, floods, natural disasters, or other insured perils.
Loss of MOT Licence
Provides cover for businesses operating MOT services, in case you lose your licence (subject to conditions).
Directors’ and Officers’ (D&O) Insurance
Provides support if a claim is made against you personally, rather than your business.
Engineering Inspection Cover
Covers qualified safety assessments of equipment essential to your operations.
What you need to know
- Decide what you want to insure: road risks can be arranged on a Comprehensive, Third Party or Third Party Fire & Theft basis. If you’re insuring tools, are you going to cover employees own tools against damage or loss?
- Has your machinery been inspected? Some lifting equipment or pressure items need statutory inspection certificates to ensure they’re in good working order. Inspections can be arranged via the policy.
- Optional Covers: it is possible to extend cover to include demonstration or tuition purposes or to cover courtesy cars borrowed by a client while theirs is being repaired.
- Understand your insurers requirements: policies can have conditions relating to the way heating, spraying or flammables can be stored and how heat is controlled. Non-compliance could see a claim rejected.
