Earlier this year, in May, a determined group from Lloyd & Whyte Community Broking Swansea took on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge – a 24-mile endurance walk covering the iconic summits of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. The team’s goal was not just to conquer the peaks within 12 hours but to raise vital funds and awareness for the #4N;cky Foundation, a charity devoted to promoting mental health awareness and education.
Walking for a cause that matters
The #4N;cky Foundation was established in memory of Nicky Bevan, who tragically lost his life to suicide in December 2022 at just 20 years old. The charity’s mission is rooted in compassion and prevention, creating a safe space where individuals can learn, share, and seek help without fear of judgment. The foundation believes that mental health is just as important as physical health and works tirelessly to challenge stigma, break down misconceptions, and promote understanding and empathy across communities.
For the Lloyd & Whyte team, the cause was close to home. Anthony Fox, one of the Swansea branch ambassadors, knows Nicky’s family personally, and the connection made the challenge all the more meaningful. “Supporting this charity felt incredibly important to us,” he shared. “Mental health touches everyone in some way, and this was a chance to do something positive in Nicky’s memory.”
The Challenge: 24 Miles, 3 Peaks, and plenty of determination
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is no small feat. The route spans 24 miles (38.6 km) and involves over 5,200 feet (1,585 metres) of ascent, often completed within 12 hours. It’s a demanding journey that tests both physical endurance and mental resilience, a fitting parallel to the cause the team was walking for.
The Lloyd & Whyte Community Broking Swansea team comprised 20 participants, including colleagues, friends, family, and clients. Together, they tackled the peaks with guided support from a specialist organisation that handled logistics, whilst the much-needed meals at the end of each long day were provided by our own support crew (non-walkers). This team also kindly drove us up to Yorkshire and back home again afterwards.
Despite the challenge, the team achieved an impressive completion time of 11 hours, which is considered quick for such a tough route.
Chris Mills, Head of Community Broking (Swansea), reflected on the experience:
“At times we felt really challenged – reaching the top of the first peak and realising we still had two more to go with an eight-mile stretch in between was tough. But we kept each other going. The weather was kind to us, and we didn’t have rain, which was a real bonus!”
Team spirit, community support, and a shared goal
The event wasn’t just about climbing mountains, it was about teamwork, community, and shared purpose. Training in their own time over weekends, the team embraced the preparation as an opportunity to boost both physical fitness and mental wellbeing.
“Walking is brilliant for your mental health,” said added Chris. “It clears your mind, helps you connect with others, and gives you time to reflect. For some of us in our 60s, it was definitely a test – but a rewarding one! We’re already planning the UK three Peaks Challenge for next year- climbing the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike), and Wales (Snowdon). ”
Through client and community support, the team raised over £2,000, which was match-funded by the Benefact Group, doubling the impact of their efforts. The cheque was officially presented to the #4N;cky Foundation on 20th October, marking a proud moment for everyone involved.
Keeping the Momentum Going
Beyond the fundraising total, the challenge represented something more profound, a commitment to supporting mental health and encouraging open conversations. By taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, the team embodied the very principles the #4N;cky Foundation stands for: perseverance, awareness, and collective strength.
As the team reflected on their journey, they agreed it was an experience they’ll never forget. From the breathtaking views to the shared laughter (and sore legs), the challenge brought everyone closer together and reinforced the importance of community, both within Lloyd & Whyte and beyond.
A lasting impact
The Lloyd & Whyte Community Broking Swansea team’s dedication to raising awareness for the #4N;cky Foundation serves as a reminder that small steps, quite literally, can lead to meaningful change. The funds raised will help the foundation continue its vital work in education, prevention, and mental health support.
“It was an incredible experience,” said Chris. “We’re proud to have done our bit to support such an important cause, and we hope our efforts help keep Nicky’s legacy alive.”
