Ensure that you're protected.
According to the Met Office, gales are the leading cause of damage and disruption in the UK, with average annual damages costing over £300 million1. With storms being so common, ensuring your home or business premises is prepared is wise. Here are some steps to help prevent storm damage from strong winds.
Reinforce Your Fences
Fences are particularly vulnerable during high winds, especially if they’re old, weak, or have shallow foundations. If your fences need repairs, it’s best to get them fixed and possibly reinforced before strong winds arrive. Keep in mind that most home or commercial property insurance policies don’t cover fence damage, so taking preventive action is crucial.
Inspect and Repair Your Roof
Regular roof inspections are essential. Consider hiring a professional roofer to check for loose tiles, slates, and flashing, which can cause significant problems if left unchecked. Flat roofs generally require more maintenance than pitched ones and should be inspected twice a year and after storms to clear debris that could block drainage or cause damage.
Trim Trees and Branches
Falling trees and branches are among the biggest risks during high winds. Regularly prune your trees, and consider removing dead or overhanging branches that could be hazardous. If a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you’ll need permission from the local planning authority before doing any work.
Secure Loose Items
Don’t forget to secure or store away loose objects like ladders, bins, and garden furniture, which can become projectiles during strong winds and cause damage to windows, doors, or other structures.
Anchor Down Trampolines
Trampolines can be especially hazardous in high winds, often ending up in unexpected places. Store your trampoline safely when not in use, especially in winter, or secure it with a trampoline tether kit. Removing the safety netting can also prevent it from catching the wind like a sail.
Lock Your Doors and Windows
Make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked, particularly those on the windward side of your home. The Met Office also advises securing loft trapdoors with bolts, especially if your roof pitch is less than 30°, to prevent them from blowing open.
Utilise Your Garage
If you have a garage, use it to protect your car from flying debris. If not, try to park your car away from trees, buildings, or anything that could fall on it.
Check Flood Risks
Storms often bring heavy rain and flooding. Find out if your home or business is at risk and take precautions to minimise damage. It’s also wise to prepare a storm kit with essentials like torches, medication, food, water, and blankets, in case of power cuts.
Review Your Insurance
Even with the best preparations, you can’t control the weather.
Double-check that your buildings insurance is up to date and provides the necessary coverage. Also check Public Liability cover in case your property causes injury to a third party. Review your insurance policy to ensure it covers winter-related damage and accidents. Adjust your coverage if needed.
